Abstract

In processes for the desulphurization and conversion to gasoline of hydrocarbon mixtures containing sulphur and difficultly vaporizable constituents e.g. residual oils shale oils, reduced crudes by processing the oils in admixture with hydrogen in the presence of catalysts maintained in the fluidized state, the process is continued without regeneration of catalyst until tests show that, after a period of constant deposition of carbon on the catalyst, the rate of deposition is beginning to rise rapidly. Reaction conditions comprising temperatures of from 750-950 DEG C., pressures of 750-2000 lbs. p.s.i., hydrogen-oil ratios of 10.000 SCF hydrogen per barrel oil, gas velocities of 0.01-0.5 ft./sec. and catalyst/oil ratios of 1 : 2-1 : 16 are specified. Catalysts employed are oxides and sulphides of Mo, W, Va, Cr, Co, Fe, Ni, Sn, particularly mixtures of the oxides or sulphides of the iron group with those of Group VI e.g. nickel molybdate, tungstate or chromate. The catalysts are mounted on porous carrier of the silica-alumina type. Examples are given of test runs in which at specified intervals specimens of catalyst are withdrawn and analysed for carbon content. From these data curves are drawn which show (a) a first period in which carbon deposition on catalyst is rapid (b) a second period during which deposition is substantially uniform (c) a third period in which the deposition becomes rapid; and from such curves for a specific stock the time at which the run should be terminated is calculated.
