Abstract

378,393. Toothed gearing ; changespeed gearing. LJUNGSTRÍM, B., 83, Linnegatan, Stockholm. May 8, 1931, No. 13684. Convention date, March 24. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii).] Shafts 1, 2, Fig. 1, are connected by a constant-mesh helical spur pair 3, 4 by sliding one of them, such as 3, which is loose on its shaft 2, into engagement with a dental clutch 5 fast on the same shaft. The teeth of the clutch 5 are inclined to the same pitch as the gear teeth of the wheel 3 and are engaged by like internal clutch teeth 5a in the wheel hub. The axial thrusts on the wheel 3 by gear and clutch teeth are in equilibrium, and the whole device economizes space. A form is described in which the clutch teeth such as 5a are formed in a separate piece bolted to the loose wheel 3. The other wheel 4 may be fast to its shaft 1, as shown, or loose and connectable by a similar clutch device. In an application to changespeed gearing shown in Fig. 2, three gear pairs are shown with a different construction of clutch for each pair, but all having the helical teeth. One clutch member 16 is integral with the shaft 2 and is engaged by helical teeth 17 projecting from the face of a loose gear 8. A clutch member 14 is separate from and fast to the shaft 2 and is engaged by teeth 15 on the face of a loose gear 7. An internal clutch member 12 is secured to the shaft 2 and is large enough to be engaged by the ends of the gear teeth of a loose gear 6. The ends of the clutch and gear teeth are bevelled to form coned surfaces 21 which engage frictionally to effect synchronism before engagement.
