Abstract

377,454. Universal joints. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., 32, Osnaburgh Street, London, and SADLER, S., Fort Dunlop, Erdington, Birmingham. Aug. 15, 1931, No. 23024. [Class 80 (ii).] A flexible shaft coupling having rigid intermeshing arms 6 with interposed rubber wedges 8, has means for adjusting the initial compression of the wedges, comprising bolts 12 screwing in the arms and acting through movable plates 11 to urge the wedges radially inwards, the arms 6 being also wedge-shaped. The driving surfaces of the rubber wedges are reinforced with vulcanite, canvas, or bonded channel-shaped metal plates 10 which slidingly engage radial recesses in the faces of the arms 6. The outer and inner faces 9 of the rubber wedges may be concave, as shown, or flat. The arms 6 have triangular supporting webs 5, and a single split pin locks each pair of bolts 12.
