Abstract
377,026. Golf clubs. HELLER, P. E., 242, Elwood Avenue, Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A. Oct. 8, 1931, No. 27997. [Class 132 (ii).] The metal shaft 1 of a golf club is separated from the socket 3 of the club head by a rubber sleeve 5 and is provided adjacent its end with prongs formed by slitting the metal and bending to flared or outwardly inclined position prior to the hardening operation, the prongs being adapted for engagement with an inwardly directed shoulder 7 in the bore of the socket to prevent axial movement of the shaft relatively to the head. As shown in Fig. 1, the invention is applied to a club of the iron type and the prongs comprise outwardly flared portions 8. As shown in Fig. 3, the invention is applied to a club of the wood type and the prongs-are formed by bending the slotted ends 16 of the shaft. The prongs are forced outwardly by the conical end portion 18 of a plug 17. When this type of shaft is applied to a club head of the iron type, the end of the shaft is forced into engagement with a conical plug previously placed in the enlarged part of the bore of the socket. As shown in Fig. 5, the prongs are formed by welding a ring 16<1> on to the end of the shaft prior to the slitting operation. Specification 287,497, [Class 132 (ii), Games], is referred to.
