Abstract
Cellulose or cellulosic materials are transformed to conversion products by treatment with relatively non-volatile acids such as sulphuric acid in the presence of acetone. The products are further converted to dextrins &c. by treatment with dilute acid. The cellulose may be first impregnated with a large quantity of a dilute solution in acetone of the acid, the excess being then expressed and the acid is concentrated by evaporation of part of the acetone. The acid is recovered from the conversion products by extraction with acetone or ether or other organic solvent and used again. A small amount of water may be present and the cellulose may be impregnated with the water before adding the acid. The Provisional Specification describes the use of other organic solvents such as ether instead of acetone.
