[Class 65 (ii).] A flexible cable for transmitting push or pull movements, guided in a lubricated metal tube, comprises a tension transmitting core 4 consisting of one, three, four, seven or nineteen untwisted or only slightly twisted metal strands, mounted in a compression transmitting member formed by a series of tubular parts 3, spaced by, and spherically seated in barrel-shaped parts 2 which have truncated conical recesses in their ends to permit the necessary angularity of the tubes. Each tube 3 may be integral with a barrel 2 which may have a curvature corresponding to that of the guide tube. As shown in Fig. 9, the end of the core 4 is fixed to a sleeve 11 which screws, to take up play between the tubes and barrels, into a terminal part 7 carrying a hinged cap actuated by an operating lever. A half barrel 13, with an interposed lock-nut if desired, is placed between the last tube 3 and the terminal part 7. The playreducing screwing of the sleeve 11 may be made automatic by twisting the core to impose a torsional force on the sleeve. In a modified non-adjustable terminal arrangement the sleeve 11 is formed by the last tube 3 which acts only to clamp the end of the wire core which is either tin-soldered to it or its ends are splayed over a loose ball in the terminal part 7. Several lengths of cable may be joined by using screwed sleeves in place of the terminal parts 7. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that the compound cable may be used without the guide tube as a rod of adjustable rigidity for supporting and also supplying current to electrical apparatus. In this case, the conducting core 4 is electrically insulated and the rigidity of the rod is varied by spacing the last barrel from the terminal part 7 by means of a nut or eccentric thus applying more or less friction at the joints. The tubes 3 are reduced in length almost to spherical shape and are made of friction material. In the tube-guided form the barrels may be cylindrical and of hard metal. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
