[Class 100 (iv).] Paper-carriages; key locks ; carriage-releasing arraregements.-A centring stop for the carriage is directly connected by a link to the shift-locking key, movement of the centring stop into operative position releasing the locking key, if in depressed position, and thereby permitting the carriage to return to lower-case position. The centring stop may be arranged also to retain the letter-spacing mechanism in disengaged position. The machine shown in Figs. 2 and 5 includes, as described in Specification 247,512, [Class 100 (iv), Typewriters &c.], a carriage C mounted on a rocking shiftframe B which is connected by a link 14 to a shift-key lever 9 provided with a locking key 15. The centring stop 30, Fig. 2, consists of a bell crank pivoted on the framework A and connected to a link 36 having a loop 39 engaging a pin 38 on the locking key. When the centring stop is moved rearwards, a lug 32 thereon can co-operate with the rail 6 to centre the carriage, and if the locking key has been depressed it is released by the link 36. Stops 34, 35 limit movement of the centring stop, and a returning spring may be provided. The centring stop 40, Fig. 5, is connected by a looped link 50 to the locking key, and has a finger 46 arranged to enter a hook 47 formed on one of the releasing levers 26 carrying the feed rack 24. When the. carriage has been centred, the centring stop is moved rearwards and the finger and hook cooperate to prevent movement of the carriage in either direction, and to hold the feed rack 24 in disengaged position, the locking key, if in depressed position, being released by the link 50. Stops 44, 45 limit movement of the centring stop, and a retaining projection 48 thereon co-operates with apertures 49.
