373,457. Typewriters. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Elliott- Fisher Co. ; Cedar Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) June 24, 1931, No. 18298. [Class 100 (iv).] Line-spacing mechanism.-In a flat-platen typewriter of the kind described in Specification 312,136, [Class 100 (iv), Typewriters &c.], in which the line-spacing mechanism is auto'- matically actuated by the carriage return and is then locked, means are provided for releasing the line-space lock' in different marginal positions of the carriage, the release being either manual or by movement of the carriage. In the mechanism in Figs. 3 and 4, a hook member' 17 mounted on the carriage engages, at the end' of the carriage-return movement with a member 19, adjustably mounted on a sliding rod 15, and the consequent movement of the rod 15 operates and then locks the line-space mechanism. The release mechanism comprises a cam carriage 30, adjustably mounted on a sliding rod 29, and provided with a spring- urged pivoted cam 34, Fig. 10, having cam inclines 38, 39. At the end of the carriagereturning movement, a pin 37 on the' hook 17 passes over the incline 38 and on to the incline 39 and, during the initial letter-spacing movement, the incline 39 co-operates with the pin to release the line-space lock. A rod' 53 is coupled by a lever 49 to the drive-control axle 24 for the traversing mechanism, described in the above-mentioned Specification, so that the longitudinal movement of the axle 24 moves a lever 41 through the rod 53. A lever 42 is coupled by a member 47 to the rod 29 and is actuated by the lever 41 through a member 43 or a pin 45 in such a manner that motion of the lever 41 in either direction actuates the lever 42 and the rod 29 so as to release the linespace lock by the co-operation of the pin 37 and incline 39. A margin stop 9 is adjustably mounted on the carriage space rack 8, and co-operates with a spring-plunger on the carriage.
