Abstract

372,673. Straight - bar knitting- machines. HAINES, J., Meadowbrook, Pennsylvania, US.A. Sept. 25, 1931, No. 26822. [Class 74 (ii).] In flat knitting-machines, the size of the loops is regulated by a shaft carrying an element which is adjusted automatically by a member carrying a series of stops adapted to be substituted one for another to determine different positions of rest fcr the element in accordance with the size of the loops to be formed. In a straight-bar knitting-machine in which a presser motion determining the size of the loop is effected by oscillating a needle bar 10 on its supporting arms 12 by a cam 17 on a main shaft 16, the cam operating through a roller 19 on a depending arm 18 adjustably linked to an arm 10a depending from the needle bar 10, the approach of the roller 19 to the cam 17 is limited by an arm 24 rigid with a loop-regulating shaft 23. A cam 32 on the shaft 16 rocks the shaft 23 through a roller 31 on an arm or lever 30a loosely mounted on the shaft but engaging an adjusting screw 35 on an arm 30b secured to the shaft, and the spindle 33 of the roller 31 is mounted in the end of the lever in eccentric bearings which allow of adjustment of the extent of the rocking of the shaft 23. To effect this automatically, a pinion 37 on the spindle 33 meshes with a gear 38 on a shaft 39 rotatable in a bearing 40 carried by the lever 30a, and an arm 42 provided with upper and lower rollers 43, 44 is secured to the lower end of the shaft. The upper roller 43 coacts with a cam member 45 loosely mounted on a sleeve 49 itself loose on the shaft 23. The cam 45 is connected by a link 70, lever 68, link 67, and lever 64 to a cam 60 on a shaft 57 which is intermittently rotated by an eccentric 86 on the main shaft 16 whenever a pawl 82 coupled to the eccentric is allowed to drop into an operative position by the lowering of a guard member 81 when buttons 72 on the measuring chain 71 of the machine rock a lever 79 connected to a link 80 on which the guard is mounted. The cam 45 also supports a pawl 54 adapted to engage a toothed ridge 47 on the sleeve 49 to rotate it, overrunning being prevented by the co-operation of a spring detent 56 with a serrated ridge 48 on the sleeve. Another ridge 51 on the sleeve 49 is notched to receive adjustable stops 52 which are successively engaged by the lower roller 44 on the arm 42. In operation, when the cam 60 reciprocates the link 70 and thereby simultaneously oscillates the cam 45 and rotates the sleeve 49, the cam moves the arm 42 aside out of the path of the stops 52 and the sleeve brings another stop ready for engagement with the roller 44. The new stop maintains the arm 42 in a fresh .position and the alteration is communicated by the bevel wheels 38, 37 to the eccentric bearings of the spindle 33 of the cam roller 19 to vary the amount by which the cam 32 rocks the shaft 23 and its arm 24 by which the size of the loops is regulated.
