371,155. Weft-tensioning devices for looms having stationary weft supplies. [Class 142 (ii).] In looms of the type wherein the weft is carried by one horizontally moving weft inserting gripper g, Fig. 1, part way across the shed and is delivered by this gripper to another gripper or delivering member which completes the pick, the weft is tensioned by passage through a slot &c. f<1> in a member f, which is carried on the lay and is rotated about a vertical axis by gearing h, g, and a rod n pivoted at s to the loom frame furnished with a spring acting on a collar on an arm k on a squared shaft. The weft is thus caused to take up a path of varying tortuousness as the member moves to one side or the other of its central position. In a modification, shown in plan in Fig. 5, a member t having central openings t<1> for the weft and strips of leather &c. t<2>, t3 for deflecting it is used. Another modification is shown in Fig. 6. In the form illustrated, a box a mounted on the lay has a series of compartments a<1> each adapted to receive a delivery gripper b to which wefts w are led from tubes c pivotally movable about a vertical spindle d carried by the box a. This is moved vertically to present any desired compartment with its gripper b in active position opposite a horizontally moving carrier bar. A vertical rod &c. v is interposed between the tension member and the weft tubes c. A similar rod &c. may be disposed on the inner side of the tension member.
