Abstract

Sulphur-containing products of the acid hydrolysis of keratin are obtained by treating keratin or keratinous substances such as wool, hair, feathers, hoofs, nails, &c. with mineral or organic acids, stopping the treatment at the point at which the substance treated loses its natural form and becomes a glutinous mass, diluting the mass with water, neutralizing it with ammonia or caustic alkali or alkali carbonates, saturating the solution with ammonium sulphate or magnesium sulphate to complete the precipitation, filtering off the precipitate, and boiling it with water. Three products are thus obtained, consisting of the part of the precipitate which remains undissolved, and which comprises keratinates, a second part comprising keratoses which separates from the boiling hot filtrate on cooling, and a third part comprising lower hydrolysis products which remains in solution on cooling the filtrate. Examples are given, in which 40 and 60 per cent sulphuric acid, 24 per cent hydrochloric acid, and 60 per cent formic acid are employed for the hydrolysis, the reactions being carried out in these cases at 80 DEG C., 60 DEG C., room temperature, and boiling temperature respectively.
