Abstract

Explosive products are obtained from raw albuminoid materials such as glue, bones, hides, hair, feathers, and others by treating the material with a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acids, separating the product of this treatment, and subjecting it to a second treatment with a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acid containing a greater proportion of nitric acid than the first mixture. For example, 100 kg. of common glue are treated with a mixture of 360 kg. of concentrated sulphuric acid of 66 B<\>ae and 270 kg. of nitric acid of 36 B<\>ae; the resultant oil floating on the surface is separated; and this oil is treated with a mixture of concentrated fuming sulphuric acid and 260 kg. of concentrated nitric acid of 36 B<\>ae. The process is carried out at normal temperatures of say about 15-25 DEG C., and in no case above 40 DEG C.
