Abstract

Flexible coated or impregnated fabrics are made by coating or impregnating a knitted or netted textile fabric with a lacquer composition, e.g. a lacquer containing a cellulose ester or ether, with or without resins, or a lacquer containing resins only, or a lacquer containing polymerized vinyl acetate or other polymerized vinyl compounds with or without natural or artificial resins. The preferred composition contains a polymerized vinyl compound, e.g. polymerized vinyl acetate; for example, compositions of the kind described in Specification 369,945. To ensure flexibility of the fabric, a plasticizing agent is included in the composition; in the case of polymerized vinyl acetate composition, plasticizers which are phenolic bodies or esters or ethers thereof, are especially suitable. As regards compositions containing polymerized vinyl compounds, the Specification describes the same plasticizers, natural and synthetic resins and the preparation thereof, as are described in Specification 369,945. The following additional example is given. A composition consisting of polymerized vinyl acetate (insoluble in alcohol), diphenylol propane-formaldehyde synthetic resin and tricresyl phosphate is dissolved in a mixture of acetone and butyl acetate and applied to a cellulose acetate knitted fabric. Specification 362,481 also is referred to.ALSO:Flexible coated or impregnated fabrics are made by coating or impregnating a knitted or netted textile fabric with a lacquer composition, e.g. a lacquer containing a cellulose ester or ether, with or without resins, or a lacquer containing resins only, or a lacquer containing polymerized vinyl acetate or other polymerized vinyl compounds with or without natural or artificial resins. The base fabric may be of any material, e.g. cotton or viscose or other cellulosic artificial fibre; for electric insulation purposes fabric consisting of or containing cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester or ether is preferably used; in this case the coating composition will not contain the same cellulose ester or ether as the fabric, or at least will not contain an ester or ether of the same solubility characteristics. An emulsion formed by adding butyl acetate and water to an acetone solution of cellulose may for example be applied, for example, to cellulose acetate fabric. The preferred composition for electrical insulation purposes contains a polymerized vinyl compound, e.g. polymerized vinyl acetate; for example, compositions of the kind described in Specification 369,945. To ensure flexibility of the fabric, a plasticizing agent is included in the composition; in the case of polymerized vinyl acetate compositions, plasticizers which are phenolic bodies or esters or ethers thereof, are especially suitable. As regards compositions containing polymerized vinyl compounds, the Specification describes the same plasticizers, natural and synthetic resins, and the preparation thereof, as are described in Specification 369,945. The cellulose ester or ether employed either as the base fabric or in the coating or impregnating composition may be in any desired stage of hydrolysis or ripening. For example an acetone soluble or a chloroform soluble cellulose acetate may be used. Other cellulose esters such as cellulose formate, propionate and butyrate, and ethyl and benzyl cellulose may be used. Water resistant derivatives, especially those in which the ester or ether groups contain no free hydroxy or carboxy groups are preferably employed. The subject-matter of the remainder of the Specification is the same as that of Specification 369,945, with the exception that knitted or netted fabrics of cotton or of cellulose acetate are throughout referred to. The following additional example is given. A composition consisting of polymerized vinyl acetate (insoluble in alcohol), diphenylol propane-formaldehyde synthetic resin and tricresyl phosphate is dissolved in a mixture of acetone and butyl acetate and applied to a cellulose acetate knitted fabric.
