Coating-compositions contain cellulose ethers such as methyl, ethyl or benzyl cellulose of low viscosity, preferably cellulose ethers having a viscosity of 0.1 to 5 determined with an Ostwald Viscosimeter, using a solution of 6 grams of cellulose ether in 100 grams of a solvent such as benzene, are used, the viscosity being compared with that of glycerine taken as 100. The compositions may also include (1) Natural or synthetic resins or gums, such as manilla, acaroid, pontianak, kauri, dammar, copals, rosin, shellac, phenol-aldehyde resins, especially such as are produced with an acid catalyst, diphenylolpropane-aldehyde resins, diphenylol-propaneketone resins, phenol-acetone or aniline-furfurol resins, or ester gums. (2) Softeners or plasticizers, such as triphenyl or tricresyl phosphate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl tartrate, triacetin, thiocarbanilide or acid amides such as sulphonamides, toluene mono-methyl sulphonamide or mixtures thereof. (3) Solvents such as benzene, toluene, ether, methyl or ethyl alcohol, acetone, chloroform. or mixtures thereof; high boiling solvents such as methyl, ethyl or butyl acetates. (4) Pigments, dyes, fillers, &c.. (5) Stabilizers or anti-acids, such as urea, calcium lactate, &c.
