Abstract
368,569. Driving arrangements for screw propellers. HARVEY, J. W., Winthrop, Maine, U.S.A. April 20, 1931, No. 11625. Convention date, May 16, 1930. [Class 114.] The power plant and transmission mechanism for a motor boat is mounted upon or within a casing the bottom wall of which is in a line with the bottom of the boat, the whole of the installation being adapted to be retractable within the shell of the boat. In one form the plant is arranged to pivot about the bottom corner of the casing and this may be effected automatically by the action of a skeg pivoted beneath the boat. The power unit 'comprises motor 6, depending shaft 7 and propeller 8 and it is mounted within or upon a casing 9 contained within a wall 36, 37 in the motor boat. The casing itself is inserted from beneath the vessel and a tight joint 10 made at the bottom of the flange. The upper part 16 of the casing is secured by spring clips. Steering is performed by the wheel 39 connected directly to the power unit 6. The exhaust from the engine enters the casing and passes outboard either by the opening 28 when the boat.is moving or by a side exhaust 29. When the skeg 31 encounters an obstacle its rearward end presses the power unit upward into the boat.
