Abstract
367,870. Free-wheel clutches. MORLEY, D. W., 10, Felix Villas, and WELLER, F. C., University, both in Hong Kong. Aug. 29, 1930, No. 25889. [Class 80 (ii).] Free-wheel mechanism for motor vehicles &c., wherein the inertia of one or more floating members is utilized to couple a driving and a driven member by a wedging action on sudden acceleration or retardation of the driving or driven member, comprises a cam member B on one of the members, such as the driving shaft A, and inertia members such as rollers C adapted to wedge between the cam and an annular member E, which may be the driven member. The rollers C are mounted in a floating cage D, and one or more springs F tend to bias the cage D, e.g. in an anticlockwise direction. In driving a car, gradual release of the accelerator pedal produces a free-wheel action, while a sudden release re-locks the mechanism and allows the road wheels to drive the engine. In a modification, the rollers C are replaced by wedge members loosely mounted on a ring such as D, a series of mutually-contacting rollers being interposed between each wedge and the corresponding cam surfaces such as G, H.
