Abstract
367,238. Manoeuvring motor vehicles in confined spaces. LAFOND, B., Villa le Cottage, Cassis, Bouches du Rhone, France. April 17, 1931, No. 11422. Convention date, April 17, 1930. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (v).] A wheeled jacking attachment to facilitate turning a motor vehicle within a confined space comprises an externally threaded cylinder 13 mounted with ball bearings 14 on a plate 1 attached to the chassis frame, an extension of the cylinder carrying a bevel gear 12 adapted to be rotated in either direction by means of bevel pinions 4, 5 on a slidable engine driven shaft 3. Rotation of the cylinder serves to lower or raise a sleeve 15 in threaded engagement therewith, rotation of the sleeve being restrained bv feathered connection 26 to a third or outer sleeve 19 mounted on ball bearings 20 and formed with a toothed flange 21 connected through pinions 22, 23 to a toothed sector 24 on the steering shaft 25. The device is located near the centre of the vehicle so as to serve to raise the front wheels off the ground. A shaft 17 mounted in brackets 16 attached to the lower end of the sleeve 15 carries a pair of wheels 18 which being controlled by the steering shaft 25, serve to steer the vehicle when the rear wheels are driven.
