Abstract

364,694. Two-stroke engines. HEMMINGSEN, T. V., 4, Ove Billes, Tvaervej, Copenhagen. Oct. 14, 1930, No. 30679. [Classes 7 (v) and 7 (vi).] Reversing.-In a reversible two-stroke engine having inlet ports controlled by the main piston, and exhaust ports controlled by an auxiliary piston, the exhaust passage is further controlled by an engine-driven member the timing of which can be varied for ensuring that the exhaust shall cease before, or simultaneously with, the inlet of scavenging-air for both directions of running. Fig. 3 shows an engine in which inlet ports 5 are controlled by the piston 4, and exhaust ports 7 by a piston 6, the exhaust passage 12 being provided with an adjustable rotary valve 13. When the valve is rotated by chain gearing, its timing may be adjusted by means of tightening-pulleys 17, 18, Fig. 4, carried by arms 19, 20, which are connected by links 21, 22, 23 to one another and to an operating-arm 24. For one direction of running, the pulleys occupy the positions shown in full lines, and the chain takes up the position 25, 26. For the reverse direction, the pulleys are moved to the dotted positions, the chain then occupying the position 251, 261 and giving the necessary adjustment to the valve 13. In modifications, the adjustment may be effected by a lost-motion coupling on the spindle of the valve, or by axially displaceable spiral gears..
