Abstract
In the production of hydrogen and carbon by the thermal decomposition of hydrocarbons, such as methane or a gas containing hydrocarbons, in the presence of a catalyst such as iron or nickel, there is used as a carrier carbon, especially carbon black, or a substance, such as magnesia, which can be removed chemically from the finished product, the temperature being below that at which the hydrocarbon would be decomposed in the absence of a catalyst; the temperature employed lies between 400 and 850 DEG C. The nickel &c. may be deposited on or mixed with the carrier as the formate or acetate or as freshly precipitated hydroxide which is then reduced with hydrogen. Contact between the catalyst and the hydrocarbon is effected by agitation and more than one apparatus may be employed, these being arranged in series so that fresh gas is passed first over partly exhausted catalyst. Excessive dilution of the catalyst by the deposited carbon is prevented by the periodic addition of fresh catalyst, preferably in the form of carbonyl. The catalyst may be removed from the carbon black by treatment with carbon monoxide at from 60 to 80 DEG C., the carbonyl being deposited on fresh carriers and decomposed at a higher temperature, e.g. 150 DEG C.; in this operation the carbon monoxide may be circulated under pressure. Sulphur may first be removed, e.g. by passage over iron powder at a temperature below 700 DEG C. Mixtures of catalysts may be employed and the catalyst may be removed by treatment with acids or chlorine. Examples are given of the reduction of methane, pentane, and benzene or other aromatic hydrocarbons. Specification 326,913, [Class 90, Non-metallic elements], is referred to.
