Abstract

In the catalyst decomposition of carbon monoxide into carbon and carbon dioxide, the catalyst, such as iron, nickel, tungsten, or molybdenum, is deposited on carbon black or on a carrier such as magnesium oxide which can be removed from the product chemically by solution. Activating agents, such as caustic alkalies or materials producing the same at the temperature of the reaction, or alkaline earth oxides, may be added. Fresh catalyst may be periodically or continuously introduced, e.g. in the form of the carboxyl of iron or nickel. Removal of the catalyst from the carbon may be effected by reaction with carbon monoxide at 50 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure or 100-180 DEG C. at pressures of from 30 to 60 atmospheres. Alternatively, the removal is effected by treatment with acid, e.g. iron is removed by heating with hydrochloric acid and nickel by nitric acid. Decomposition of the carbon monoxide is carried out at normal or increased pressures, e.g. 100 atmospheres. Two examples are given, using nickel and iron mixed with carbon black respectively as catalyst, completion of the reaction being effected by the use of a second apparatus or by passing the gas first over partly exhausted catalyst. Specification 326,913, [Class 90, Non-metallic elements], is referred to.
