363,551. Freewheel clutches. MORRIS, E. E. and MORRIS, D. R., Manorfields, Leesons, Chislehurst, Kent. Feb. 17, 1931, No. 4970. [Class 80 (ii).] A freewheel clutch for motor vehicles &c. comprises a driving-member c movable as a nut along a quick-pitch screw thread i on an extension of the driven member g, which it engages by inclined teeth f, h, the nut-member c retaining engagement with the thread on overrunning solely by its separate terminal portion d, which lies in a recessed part of the main body and engages it by ratchet teeth d2 and pivoted pawls d<1>. Motion of the part c to the right is limited by a thrust-washer k and bearing l, the tendency of the parts c, d to jam by axial pressure being avoided by an antifriction bearing therebetween or preferably by the interengagement of pins m, n which positively rotate the part d with the member g. The pawls &c. are so spaced that, on resumption of drive, the multiple threads in the parts c, d are continuous, and the threads and clutch teeth are so related that the latter make contact when the nut c has fully moved to the left. Bidirectional drive for reverse &c. is provided by engagement of dogs q on the extension j with dogs p on a manually-controlled member o splined to the nut c and to the driving-section a of the divided propeller-shaft a, b.
