Abstract

Marine alg are ground up and treated with a solution of an alkaline earth salt, e.g. calcium chloride, and soluble salts, such as iodides, are then extracted with cold or hot water. In both processes it is preferred that the fresh treating liquid should first come into contact with the most fully treated material. The washes charged with salts are clarified by boiling with an alkali carbonate, which precipitates the lime or other earth as carbonate. After filtration, the purified wash liquor is concentrated, and the various salts crystallized out. The calcic alg are macerated in the cold with water acidulated with sulphuric acid, then separated and washed with water, and treated with a lye of caustic soda, carbonate of soda, or magnesia. A viscous solution of the metal alginate is obtained. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) it is stated that the alkaline alginate may be treated with a strong acid to precipitate alginic acid, and that insoluble alginates may be obtained by double decomposition with suitable salts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Marine alg are ground up and treated with a solution of an alkaline-earth salt, e.g. calcium chloride, and soluble salts, such as iodides, are then extracted with cold or hot water.
