Abstract

An apparatus for cleaning both sides of a window simultaneously or for coating surfaces with decorative material or protective material such as paint involves the use of a pair of operative elements coupled for simultaneous operation. In the form shown in Fig. 2 a pair of combined squeegees and <PICT:0361866/III/1> <PICT:0361866/III/2> brushes 17, 16 are carried by a frame capable of straddling a window and provided with a roller 26 running on a window rail r. Side rollers 34 serve as guides to prevent lateral motion. Heads 15 carrying the brushes and squeegees are mounted on tubes 19 which are capable of being simultaneously rotated by bevel gearing 29, 22 to bring one or other of the working tools into operation or in the event of meeting an obstruction as indicated in Fig. 3 to alter the inclination of the heads. The latter are capable of sliding on the tubes 19 by means of a slotted connection and are normally pulled upwards by cables 32 on drums 30 having springs 31. Instead of being mounted as shown the squeegees and brushes may each be carried by strips hinged together for varying the relative position. Rubbing or scraping operations may be performed by replacing with appropriate tools. The brushes may be moistened with water or oil or paint applied to them for painting operations. In a modification the two sets of working tools are mounted by means of angularly disposed pairs of arms on sleeves which can be grasped and which are capable of sliding on guides forming part of a framework housing bevel gears operating as before mentioned. The framework is pivotally articulated to a wheeled carriage which is capable of running along the uneven framing of a window or the like. The two sets of tools are operatively connected for simultaneous rotary movement by the bevel gearing and for simultaneous longitudinal sliding movement by a chain and sprocket connection. The brushes are preferably supplied with liquid from reservoirs clamped to the brush holders. Telescopic means is provided to adapt the device for objects of larger size than usual. For dealing with windows in which the glass is not arranged centrally of the frame, a feeler device is used for centring the working tools.
