Abstract

361,308. Annealing. CLARK EQUIPMENT CO., Buchanan, Michigan, U.S.A. May 15, 1930, No. 15003. Convention date, May 15, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 72.] A motor vehicle axle is formed to the described shape by the press shown in Figs. 16 and 17. The axle is heated and placed between dies 47, 50. The lower die 47 is carried by a plunger 51 pressed upwardly with a constant predetermined pressure by hydraulic pressure in a cylinder 52. The upper die 50 is carried by a plunger 56 working in an hydraulic cylinder 57. When pressure is admitted to the cylinder 57, the upper die is forced down and forms the axle to the desired shape, the upward pressure of the lower die being sufficient to ensure this. A sufficiently greater downward pressure is then applied to the upper die to overcome the upward pressure of the lower die so that both dies and the axle are forced downwards into an annealing or quenching bath 55. Since the axle is still held firmly in the dies warping is prevented. The lower die is provided with a follower plate 48 pressed by springs 49 which give under the pressure of the upper die but ensure that this die has a firm grip on the axle.
