[Class 37.] A testing instrument similar in shape and size to a fountain pen consists of an insulating casing a containing a neon tube d, observable through a slot e, which tube is mounted on an insulating block n through which project flexible leads j from the electrodes f, g of the neon tube ; these leads are protected when not in use by a cap b fitting on to the block n. The other end o of the casing is shaped to receive the cap b when the instrument is in use. A high resistance m is placed in series with one or both of the leads. The end o is in the form of a metal cap extended to form a sleeve o<1> enclosing part of the neon tube d. For high tension tests the cap o is brought into contact with the conductor in which the high-tension current is flowing.
