Abstract
<PICT:0357749/III/1> Carbon black is obtained by the partial combustion of diacetylene or its substitution products with oxygen or gases containing oxygen, such as air, or oxides of carbon or mixtures of these gases. When using oxides of carbon only, they are advantageously preheated, and dehydrogenating catalysts, such as platinized asbestos, may be employed. In view of the explosive nature of the materials, a special burner is used in which a gas outlet 2, arranged in the point of the burner tube 1, is narrow and is cooled by water passages 4, brass safety netting 3 being arranged behind the outlet 2 to prevent flame caused by carbon sparks from striking back into the tube 5 conveying the diacetylene. Several outlet channels may be arranged in the point of the burner with corresponding safety nets. The combustion gases are supplied in any suitable manner. Two examples are furnished.
