Abstract
256,631. Nouvelle, A. L. Aug. 5. 1925, [Convention date]. Hydrogen. - Substantially pure hydrogen intended for working internal-combustion engines is produced by decomposing water vapour which has been vaporized bv the heat of the engine exhaust, in a gas-generator by means of ignited pulverized carbon which is projected into the gas-generator in a stream of hot air, the latter being the least quantity necessary for maintaining the reaction temperature, and passing the resulting gases into an apparatus where the carbonic acid is separated from the hydrogen. The gas generator may comprise an ellipsoidal chamber of steel or nickel provided with a refractory lining. The pulverized carbon and the preheated air are introduced through concentric nozzles b, c through the former of which the pulverized carbon is supplied, and through the latter the preheated air. Water vapour is supplied through the nozzle d and the gases pass through the exit tube e to a heat interchanger which preheats the air. The carbonic acid may be separated by means of an apparatus comprising two concentric tubes, the inner one of which is porous and receives the gas mixture. A gas enriched in hydrogen passes from the outer tube. The nozzles b, being in the ignition circuit, the carbon, air, water-vapour mixture is normally fired by sparks. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of alcohol for starting the reaction. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
