Abstract

Mixed salts containing both ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen are made by treating ammonium nitrate in the solid or hydrated state with liquid or gaseous ammonia to form a solid or liquid solution of the salt therein, and then neutralizing the ammonia with acids such as sulphuric or phosphoric, acid anhydrides, acid salts such as potassium bisulphate, or mixtures thereof. A dry product is obtained from aqueous solutions by controlling the water content so that the heat of neutralization effects a complete evaporation. The ratio of nitrate to ammoniacal nitrogen can be predetermined by varying the pressure and temperature employed and hence the composition of the initial solution. According to examples, a solution of ammonium nitrate in ammonia is led into a suspension of ammonium sulphate in ammonium nitrate melt, aqueous sulphuric acid being supplied simultaneously. Substantially dry ammonium sulphate nitrate is obtained. The same product is made by spraying a solution of ammonium nitrate in ammonia, and aqueous sulphuric acid from concentric nozzles. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes the production of ammonium nitrate by using nitric acid for the neutralization.
