Abstract

356,388. Extruding seed, meal, &c. ELTON, E. B., 10, Atwick Road, Hornsea, Yorkshire. July 17, 1930, No. 21631. [Class 87 (ii).] Plastic substances such as seed, meal, &c., are delivered between a pair of interengaging drums having annular compression chambers formed on their peripheries, the chambers of one or both drums having apertured bases through which the material is extruded for subsequent cutting into lengths by a knife. In the form shown the two drums 10, 11 are each provided with a series of spaced flanges 33 which intermesh as shown in Fig. 4. Radially-extending ribs are fitted in the lowest portions of the grooves between the flanges of one or both drums to provide passages with flared outer ends through which the material is forced into the interior of the drum or drums when it is out by the knife 37 and delivered by the shoots 41. The material is fed from a chamber 29 by a pair of worms 23, 28 to a shoot 30 leading between the drums. A binding, drying, cooling or finishing material may be supplied from additional chambers 43 by worms 44. For example, a drying material may be supplied to line the grooves before the admission of sticky material through the main shoot 30, thus producing articles with a non- sticky outer covering. One drum may be mounted inside the other and in this case the drum in the interior may be provided with perforated chambers or merely with annular flanges.
