[Class 60.] Bevelling ; disc apparatus.-A machine for grinding and polishing the edges of strips or plates of marble, glass, ceramic compositions, &c., consists of means for clamping and holding the plate in a vertical plane and traversing it with its lower edge arranged successively to be operated upon by yieldably mounted grinding, smoothing and polishing-elements. The machine is made up in sections consisting of a feeding section, grinding and polishing sections A, B, C and a discharge section, the work being supported by rollers 1 freely mounted by pins 2 in channels 3 adjustably carried by the machine frame 4. The plate 82 is held and moved through the machine by clamps comprising plates 13 with legs 14 having shoes 12 movable along the machine bed in ways formed by edges 8 and tops 9 secured thereto ; the plates B have thereon a resilient covering and a lug 15 extending from the plate carries pivoted means 17 with resilient work-gripping terminals 18, screws 20 serving to press the terminals 18 on to the work. The work is ground &c. by grinding &c. discs 41 carried by vertical or approximately vertical shafts 28 mounted in bearings 37, 37<1> in a sleeve 36 held by poured-in metal 40 in a part 39 of a housing 35 on the bed 4. The shaft is rotatable in a collar 43 having lugs 44 engaged by a lever pivoted to a lug of the housing 35 and carrying an adjustable weight and an adjusting screw, the grinding disc may thus yield and its pressure on the work may be adjusted. The grinding &c. discs are all driven from a shaft 23 driven by an electric motor 22, through gearing 24, 25 and a clutch 29 which allows of the vertical movement of the shaft 28. A small bevel is ground on the front corner of the plate edge by grinding &c. wheels 41<1> carried by an inclined shaft 57 driven by belting from a motor D mounted on an extension 55 of the bed 4, the shaft being resiliently supported axially by a spring 62 adjustable by a nut 60, and a bevel also is ground on the other corner by similar grinding &c. wheels driven by motors E, and mounted to move towards and from the plate 82, according to its thickness, on a slideway 67 under the control of an arm 72 carrying a roller 73 adapted to contact with the plate; the support 65 for the motor &c. has a roller 66 running on the slideway and is guided by a shaft and a hanger. The clamps 7 are moved along the machine by a chain mounted on sprockets 83, 84. and engaging lugs 86 on the clamps. Water, or water and polishing- material, is supplied by a pipe 74 and nozzles, drains 77 being provided in the housings 35, and guards 80 and flexible splash guards 8 are provided.
