Abstract
Liquid carbonaceous materials such as petroleum products and residues, and asphalts, particularly those containing sulphur, are refined by heating under pressure in the presence of reducing gases such as hydrogen or gases yielding hydrogen and in the presence of a catalyst of chromium or chromium compounds brought in colloidal state on to a carrier such as pumice stone, active carbon, finely divided coal, silica gel or porous clay. The catalyst may also contain molybdenum or its compounds. The reaction is preferably carried out at moderate temperatures, such as 400 DEG C., and for a short period, to avoid splitting of the molecules. The catalyst may be prepared by reducing a solution of chromic acid with hydrogen sulphide and absorbing the product on a decolourizing carbon known by the registered Trade Mark of Norit. Examples are given of the treatment of a lubricating oil with a catalyst so prepared and also with a catalyst containing in addition molybdenum oxide.
