Abstract

Carbonaceous materials such as coal, lignite, cellulose, petroleum, asphalt, tars, phenols, cresols and the like are treated at elevated temperature and pressure with hydrogen, or gases yielding hydrogen, in the presence of catalysts consisting of metals or metal compounds brought in colloidal state on to carriers other than those of carbon. Suitable carriers are precipitated metal hydroxides, pumice, silica gel, porous clays, p alundum, diatomite, silica, and substances containing magnesium, such as dolomite. Examples are given of catalysts of molybdenum oxide or chromium hydroxide, aluminium hydroxide, and iron hydroxide. The hydrogenation treatment may or may not cause splitting of the molecules. Specification 338,192, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], is referred to.ALSO:Phenols, cresols and the like oxygen-containing compounds are treated with hydrogen or gases yielding hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure, in presence of a catalyst consisting of metals or metal compounds brought in a colloidal state on to carriers other than those of carbon; oxygen is thereby removed from the materials without a splitting of the molecule. Suitable carriers for the catalyst are precipitated metal hydroxides, silica, pumice, porous clays, alundum, diatomite, silica gel, and substances containing magnesium, such as dolomite.
