353,431. Guards for coal -cutting machines. VERNON, W., The Elms, Kingsbury, near Tamworth, and THOMAS, S., Euroclydon, Weddington Road, Nun. eaton, both in Warwickshire. April 22, 1930, No. 12333. [Class 68 (i).] A guard for a coalcutting machine comprises a guard frame fitted to the rear of the machine frame adjacent the cutter jib and extending rearwardly, and one or more rearwardlydirected deflector plates carried by the guard frame. A skeleton frame 8 is pivoted to the machine frame by an arm 9 and pin 10 and is normally fixed thereto by adjustable arms 11 ; when the cutter jib 5 is to be slued, the arms 11 are released. A guard-plate 12 is fixed to the arms 9. 11 and has a groove 15 engaged by a pin on the top of the machine; it also has a guideflange 17 engaging the machine frame. A guardplate 13 on the coal-face side is fixed to the plate 12 and the jib ring 14. A guard-plate 18 is pivoted at 19 to the frame 8 and supported in guides 20, while it may be locked by a pin passing through a hole 22 ; the plate 18 is curved rearwardly to help to clear the cut. A deflector 23 for cuttings is adjustably and detachably fixed to the plate 12 on the goaf side of the machine by an angle bracket 24; a shorter deflector 26 is similarly fixed on the coal face side of the machine. A bar 28 surrounds the cutter-chain drive sprocket, being fixed to the deflector 23 and slidably supported in a bracket 29. The guard and scraper may be adjusted for either right or left-hand cutting, and for over or undercutting. A bracket 30 carries the electric cables to the machine. A scraper 31, Fig. 7, or 32, Fig. 5, is attached to a cutter box or at the front or back of a cutter to assist in removing cuttings.
