[Classes 29 and 64 (iii).] Heat exchangers, particularly milk coolers, comprise a number of vertical tube-units arranged side by side and laterally separable sidewise from each other, one heat exchange medium circulating through the tubes and the other flowing over the tubes. Each unit 7' comprises superposed tubes 13 connected to one another bv front and rear headers 14, 15, Fig. 5, each of which has chambers 16 connecting adjacent tube ends. An intermediate unit 7a may be relatively fixed to a clamping rod 20, the other units being spaced from this unit by bushes 18 which are in alignment with ports 17 in abutting faces of adjacent headers. The series of units forms one section of a series a, b, c, which are united by straps 12. Cooling liquid supplied to the fixed unit of each section by pipe 25 flows through adjacent units in parallel and a temperature cooling gradient may be obtained by using liquid at different temperatures. Opposite sides of the cabinet are open and have movable closures 6 to facilitate removal of the units for cleaning. Rails or tracks 8 may be provided to carry the sections and the closures to simplify moving of these parts. The collecting pan 29 is spaced to one side of the ports 17 to avoid any leakage of the cooling medium into the pan. The vertical shield 30 serves for the same purpose.
