[Class 44.] An attache case &c. fastening of the kind in which a spring-pressed bolt engages an eye &c. on the hasp member has an auxiliary latch capable of movement independent of the main bolt, a continued retracting movement of the auxiliary latch serving positively to retract the main bolt in the event of the main spring being broken. Normally the main and auxiliary latches operate simultaneously. As shown, a lock having the usual slidable keyhole boss 2 connected by members 7, 8 with the bolt 9, the bevelled end 11 of which engages the eye 12 of the hasp 13 in the ordinary way, has a slidable latch plate 1 mounted under the boss 2 and in front of the lock plate 3. The latch 1 has an aperture 4 allowing passage of the usual key, and slots 5, 6 co-operating with members 7, 8 to guide the latch in a direction parallel with that of the main bolt 9. Slots 5, 6 allow latch 1 a limited independent movement, but a continued retraction of.member 1 causes the end of slot 6 to engage with member 8 and positively retract bolt 9 in the event of breakage of the main spring 15 which shoots bolt 9. Plate 1 is urged to shot position by a spring 17 coiled round member 8 and having one end bearing against the wall of boss 2, the other end bearing against a projection 18 on plate 1. The outer end of plate 1 is bent to provide an inclined portion 16 so that as the hasp 13 is pressed home, the end 16 is first pressed back by, and then snaps over, the edge of the hasp. A modification using an arcuate spring is described, and in further modifications the auxiliary latch is spring-urged with reference to the lock casing. In one of these a pivoted latch is used, the pivoted member extending perpendicularly across the path of boss 2.
