Convention date, May 3, 1929. [Class 100 (ii).] Embossing and stamping. - A power embossing or stamping press, which is especially applicable for acting on blanks which require a large clearance between the platen and the die, is constructed with a platen 9 which is movable on guideways 8 independently of a crosshead 7 to which the platen is adjustably connected by means of screws 10 and nuts 17 which are mounted in the crosshead with capacity of rotation but with restraint against axial motion. The crosshead is also controlled by the guideways 8, and is reciprocated by a pair of connecting-rods 6 from a crank shaft 4. To adjust the platen 9 relatively to the crosshead, the screws 10 are moved axially by simultaneously rotating the nuts 17 by means of worms 21 on shafts 22 geared together and connected by spur gears 30, 31 to the shaft of an electric motor 35 which is mounted on the crosshead 7. The worms 21 engage worm wheels 20 formed integrally with the nuts 17. When the screws 10 are raised to their highest position, so as to leave the maximum space between the platen 9 and the bed 3 for the die, the ends of the screws extend above the crank shaft 4. The platen 9 is preferably formed as a rigid casting having a lower platen face 46, a central rib 47, an upper truss plate 48 and transverse end ribs 49 formed with projections moving in the guideways 8. Transverse ribs 50 are also formed in alignment with the screws 10, and a central rib 51 also assists to strengthen the parts 46, 47, 48.
