Abstract

Fertilizers are granulated by agitating the pulverized material in the presence of steam. The granulator may comprise a cylindrical drum fitted with means for supplying steam and provided with an agitator, e.g. a central shaft carrying a number of blades whose surfaces are arranged in opposed directions so that the material is thrown backwards and forwards several times during each revolution. Alternatively, the granulator may consist of a rotating drum fitted with suitable baffles. The product coming from the granulator may be passed through a rotary dryer and screened, the over-size granules being passed through a crusher and again screened. The fines may be recirculated to the granulator, after grinding if required.ALSO:Fertilizers are granulated by agitating the pulverized material in the presence of steam. The product coming from the granulator may be passed through a rotary drier and screened, the over-size granules being passed through a crusher and again screened. The fines may be recirculated to the granulator, after grinding if required. The process is particularly applicable to mixed fertilizers, e.g. those containing one soluble salt such as ammonium nitrate and at least one insoluble mineral such as gypsum or rock phosphate, or complete fertilizers such as mixtures of ammonium sulphate and phosphate, and a potassium salt. In the case of mixed fertilizers, the mixing may be effected before or during the treatment with steam. When gypsum is one of the constituents, it may be partially or completely dehydrated before granulation.
