Abstract

<PICT:0347537/IV/1> In apparatus for generating acetylene under any permissible pressure, a considerable excess of water is sprayed from the generator on to the carbide, which is held in a cage formed by the lower part of the carbide receptacle; the latter projects into the generator, and is flared downwardly towards the cage. As shown, the lower part of the carbide receptacle 2 is formed as a cage 3, and water from the generator is sprayed by a pump 13 on to the carbide in the cage. The resulting sludge is directed by a shoot 16 to the side of the generator remote from the pump intake. The pump is put in or out of action by a pressure switch 11 connected to the gas space. The water may be circulated until sufficient sludge has accumulated to necessitate replacement of all the water, or the bottom layer of sludge may be drawn off, continuously or at intervals, and replaced by fresh water. The carbide receptacle 2 is fed by gravity from a hopper 6, and water is supplied by a pipe 9. A safety valve 10, partitions 15 to assist the separation of sludge, a sludge outlet 17, and a swing plate 4, to assist in emptying the receptacle 2, are provided also.
