Abstract

346,503. Regulating; spray carburetters. ELLOR, J. E., 149, Burton Road, Derby. Feb. 5, 1930, No. 3878. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (vi).] In altitude controls for aircraft engines provided with supercharging-blowers, in which full opening of the throttle at ground level is prevented by an aneroid device acting through relay mechanism, for example as described in Specification 346,892, means are provided for preventing damage to the aneroid device by backfires, or by excessive vacuum, as when the engine is idling. An aneroid device b<2> subjected to the pressure in the inlet manifold a4 actuates a valve d which connects one side of a relay piston b<7> to the blower intake a<1>, and the other side to the blower outlet a<4>, thereby actuating a cam c acting on the pilot's throttle control h, h<1>. Damage due to backfires is prevented by the provision of small holes d<3>, d<4> in the communication between the aneroid chamber bl and the pipe g connected to the inlet manifold. Damage due to excessive vacuum when the engine is idling is prevented by a valve j<1> connected to the throttle by a rod j<3>, so as to open the aneroid chamber to atmosphere at j when the throttle approaches the closed position. The opening j also serves to drain away liquid fuel.
