Abstract

345,448. Measuring-tapes. RABONE & SONS, Ltd., J. and RABONE, E. L., Whitmore Street, Birmingham. Feb. 25, 1930, No. 6184. [Class 106 (ii).] Comprises a construction of the kind in which a metallic ribbon of concave convex cross section is housed in a container when not in use. The container is formed in two parts 4, 5 having central inwardly pressed projections 4a, 5a provided with holes. Pressed into one hole is a tubular bush 6 upon which rotates an open-ended sheet-metal drum 7. The closed end of the drum is cut away to form tongues 7a which are bent into a vertical position. Adjacent the centre a further circular series of tongues 7b are pressed out to form stops adapted to co-operate with a two-armed lever 9 disposed in a diametrical slot in the bush 6. The lever is held in engagement with the stops by a spring 10 located in the bush ; and may be moved out of engagement by operating a push 11. At one point the drum is provided with a slit to receive the tape 8 passing through a slit in the casing, the slit terminating in a hole in the end of the drum adapted to receive a securing peg for the tape. A clock spring 13 serves to wind the tape on to the drum. A finger grip 14 prevents the free end of the tape being drawn into the casing.
