Abstract
Yarns, fabrics, &c. made of or containing organic derivatives of cellulose, such as cellulose acetate or other cellulose esters or cellulose ethers, are delustred by precipitating zinc sulphide therein. For example, the materials may be treated with a solution of a zinc salt e.g. chloride or sulphate followed by treatment with a solution of alkali sulphide or of hydrogen sulphide in the presence or absence of acid provided the acidity is not such as to inhibit precipitation of zinc sulphide. The zinc salt solution may be such as to constitute a swelling agent for the cellulose derivative, or the treatment may be effected in presence of other swelling agents, e.g. formic acid, acetic acid, acetone, &c. The materials may be saponified before or after the application of the zinc radicle, e.g. as in Specifications 316,521 and 318,468, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. In examples, cellulose acetate fabric is padded in a bath of 320 parts of zinc chloride and 750 parts of water, with or without formic acid, at a temperature of 70 DEG C.; the padded fabric is allowed to stand over night, and is then padded with a 2 per cent solution of sodium sulphide. The cellulose derivative materials may be associated with other fibres, e.g., cotton, cellulose, artificial silk, wool, silk, &c.
