Abstract
508,701. Cellulose derivatives; artificial silk. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and SHARPLES, E. H. Dec. 2, 1938, No. 429. [Class, 2 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Cellulose textile material such as cotton or regenerated cellulose is rendered water-resistant by subjecting the material; which has been dried until it is practically free from moisture but which contains a small proportion; e.g. 0'1 per cent by weight, of a fatty substance to the action of dry chlorine and thereafter forming in the material an insoluble metallic compound of a fatty acid. The fatty substance may be normally present in natural .fibres, but in the case of artificial fibres.it is added to the solution from which the threads are made or by an after-treatment. The example describes treating viscose woven fabric with sodium oleate solution, drying at 60 C. for 6 hours and placing in an atmosphere containing 0'3 per, cent of chlorine, for an hour at 60 C. After removal the fabric is immersedin a soap solution, e.g. sodium oleate, centrifuged and rinsed in hard water containing 10-30 parts of calcium and magnesium compounds per 100,000 parts of water. Specification 213,765, [Class 2 (ii)], is referred to.
