Abstract

340,378. Stuffing-boxes. WIRZ, E., Uetikon-on-See, Zurich, Switzerland. Nov. 18, 1929, No. 35232. [Class 122 (v).] In order to econimize space in the telescopic pistons of hydraulic tipping devices, the cup-leather packing 11 is in the form of a sleeve, having an axial cut 2 at the bottom of a recess which is engaged by a ring 6 of wedge section. The ring 6 may be integral with the cylinder, as shown, or separate, and is formed with passages 7. The sleeve 11 may be compressed by a gland 14, or may be formed with a recess and axial cut at the upper end also, to act as packing, or to remove dirt. The packing is preferably of gutta-percha, and may have linen reinforcements 12.
