Abstract

340,116. Smith, W. Prince-, and Waterhouse, D. Dec. 7, 1929. Building-motions; doffing-arrangements; thread. holding arrangements.-A spinning &c. machine fitted with a Scaife's building motion and mechanical doffing mechanism is provided with a separable connection, which is rigid and positive during spinning, between the chain rod and rod end iron and with means operable during the doffing operation to control directly the, position and movement of the lifter plates and associated elements. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an adjustable stop J on the chain rod G normally engages a pivoted latch H on the rod end iron F and a star wheel N<1> fixed to a ratchet wheel N is journaled on the rod end iron below the latch H. A bracket M on the chain rod G carries a pivoted detent M<2> and a roller M<1> which is adapted to be engaged by the bifurcated end L<2> of a pivoted hand lever L. When doffing, the lever L is depressed until its end L<2> contacts with the roller M<1> when pressure on the lever causes an adjustable stop M<3> on the bracket M to engage the rod end iron F and the detent M<2> to rotate the ratchet and star wheels, the star wheel thus raising and holding the latch H out of contact with the stop J. The weight of the chain rod G &c. is now taken bv the lever L which is allowed to move upwards to lower the lifter rail D and bobbins on to the usual transfer pegs positioned thereunder by an appropriate means such as that described in Specification 220,835, [Class 120 (ii), Spinning, twisting, &c.]. When the empty bobbins have been moved below the spindles, the lever L is again moved downwards to raise the lifter rail to the spinning position, the detent again rotating the star wheel to permit the lever H to fall back in front of the stop J to take the end pressure of the chain rod etc.; the lever L is then raised and retained in the raised position by a pivoted catch P. In the case of a flyer frame the doffing operation may be still further expedited by providing, in the rear of the flyers, the angularly movable prongs &c. described in Specification 339,117.
