Abstract
340,076. Glass manufacture. DICKER, S. G. S., 20, Holborn, London.-(Naamlooze Vennootschap Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Uitvindingen, 67, Wynhaven, Rotterdam, Holland.) Oct. 21, 1929, No. 31935. [Class 56.] Drawing ; forming tubes and rods.-Relates to the method of making glass tubes or rods in which cylindrical blocks of glass are threaded on a mandrel, or piled in a tube, the lower end of the mandrel or tube being shaped to support the blocks. The lower end of the pile is heated, and the glass flows downwards and is drawn away by suitable mechanism. According to the present invention, the mandrel or tube is rotated continuously to secure a more regular distribution of the glass. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the glass blocks 11 are inserted in the upper end of an inclined tube 10 which is supported by rollers 15, 16 and is provided with a gear wheel 17 by which it is rotated. The lower end, 12, of the tube is constricted to support the blocks, and it is heated by burners 13. The blocks are shaped as shown in Fig. 2 so that they centre one another when piled, and they may have a central aperture 14 through which air may be blown to maintain the bore of the glass tube as it is formed. The aperture may be dispensed with, the lower end of the holder 10 being formed as a bulbous enlargement so that the molten glass spreads along its sides and forms a tube at the outlet. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the holder consists of a tubular mandrel 20 supported by three bearings 21 which are spaced apart so that glass blocks can rest between them. Each bearing consists of a pair of pivoted jaws, and the upper jaw of a pair carries gear wheels which transmit the rotation of a driving-shaft 40 to gear teeth formed on a reduced portion of the mandrel. The jaws can be opened to allow a glass block to slip down the mandrel, and by using three of these bearings, the mandrel is constantly supported and rotated. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, a mandrel 50 is supported by a bearing 51 and driven by a pinion 52. Each of the glass blocks 53 is made in two halves, as shown in Fig. 7, and to hold them together the mandrel is surrounded by a rotatable tube 54 which is heated by a burner 55 to fuse the blocks together.
