365,594. Forming roll - rims and screw-necks on glassware. ZAPPERT, E., 55, Chancery Lane, London.-(Dichter, J. ; 4, Miinz Strasse, Berlin.) Oct. 16, 1930, No. 30966. [Class 56.] In the mechanical production of roll-rims or screw-necks on tubular glass vessels in a machine of the kind in which rotating glass tubes are fed in succession and intermittently, the ends being preheated, melted and shaped by dies or the like, a plurality of separate stations are provided for neck-thickening and shaping so that a number of tubes are treated simultaneously, and progressively passed from station to station. The machine comprises pairs of overlapping roller discs 7, forming bearings for the tubes 1 at working stations 1a .. 1e, each provided with a burner and suitable forming tool. The discs 7 alternately rotate in opposite directions sufficiently to cause a complete revolution of the tubes, which are carried in the direction of the arrow 13 (Fig. 4) by carrier bars 11 driven by camoperated intermittently - acting mechanism. Counter-pressure rollers 9 may be provided. The tubes are preheated at stations 1a, 1b and constricted at 1c by the head 14 of a bell-crank lever 15 which is swung in. an arc to press against the side of the tube, forming an indentation 25. A mandrel 17 meanwhile supports the end of the tube which is then opened out at 1d by a mandrel 18, tilted into position by the device operating mandrel 17. The open end 26 is then allowed to contract under the action of the flame causing the belling 27, the final shaping taking place at 1e, after a further thickening, at an additional station if desired. The rim is shaped by a mandrel 19 and tools 21 caused by lever mechanism to converge upon the neck. The tube may be further heated and a forming tool introduced to form a pouring lip, or a screw-neck 29 may be produced in a further station, in the same manner as in 1e, the tube receiving, in addition to its alternate rotation, a to and fro axial movement, effected by setting the roller 9 at an angle. The tools are all similarly operated by means of cam mechanism disposed alongside the apparatus. A screwneck may be formed with or without previously forming a roll-rim. The glass tubes may be necked at both ends and then divided and bottomed.
