Abstract

339,940. Hargreaves, H. Sept. 9, 1929. Guarding against unauthorized use.-To prevent rotation of the steering shaft T<1> of a motor vehicle, a slidable toothed plate- J is brought into engagement with teeth thereon by rotation through 180� of a hand operated shaft L carrying a cam or tappet C under the control of a permutation lock W. The toothed plate is operated through a yielding link M by a crank or eccentric L<1> on the shaft L, which is provided with an actuating handle H and a portion R of reduced diameter intended to break in the event of forced actuation whilst locked. An arm on the shaft may also be provided to close an earthing switch N connected to tile ignition tube T<2>. The permutation lock comprises a series of lettered or figured cylinders D<1> - - D<4> rotated individually by knobs K<1> - - K<4> and formed with slots which when brought into alignment allow outward movement of a radially slidable element S bearing on the cam C the major radius of which is at 90� to the throw of the crank or eccentric L<1>.
