Abstract

339,072. Lockheed Hydraulic Brake Co., Ltd., and Sherwood, W. J. Nov. 1, 1929. Turning.-In tools for cutting internal annular grooves in tubes &c., wherein a plunger eccentrically carrying the tool and rotatable for feeding in the tool by advance of a body member, in which the plunger is eccentrically mounted, due to a helical slot therein being engaged by a roller &c. on the plunger, the plunger at its forward end bears against a faced surface at the mouth of the work. The tool, which may be used in lathes or drilling-machines, comprises a shank portion 1 carrying an eccentric portion 2 of enlarged diameter, internally bored coaxially with the portion 2 at 4 and 3 respectively. A plunger 8 with an extension 9 slidable in these bores is bored to receive a spring 14 and a guiding pin 7 integral with a member 6 screwed into the shank and carries a flange 15 to bear against a faced surface at the mouth of the work and a tool 18 whose shank 17 together with the flange 15 is coaxial with the shank 1 in the inoperative position. The tool is fed into the work by moving forward the shank 1 when a roller 12 on a pin 11 held in the plunger 8 moves along a helical groove 2a in the extension 2 of the shank, thereby rotating the plunger. An adjustable or fixed stop may limit the motion. In a modification the portion 1 may be replaced by a cylindrical block drilled eccentrically for the reception of the plunger &c. Tools.-The tool may be of the form shown in Fig. 6, a fresh tooth being turned into operation when one is blunt. A multiple cutter mounted on a single shank may be employed if necessary.
