Ratchet and like step-by-step conveyers. - Apparatus f o r screening maize or other cereals from straw or for other purposes comprises two sets of parallel bars 1, 2, Figs. 2 and 4, disposed alternately, each set being supported freely at one end on slides 10, or bv pivoted links, and driven at the other end by cranks or eccentrics 9, 19 so as to have a reciprocating and up- and-down movement, the cranks or eccentrics being disposed at 180‹ so that the movements of the two sets of bars are in opposite phase. In one construe tion. the bars are connected in sets to the side bars 6, 13 which provide the supporting and driving connection by through bolts 14 and distance pieces 16 connecting and spacing lugs 16 on the bars. The side bars 6, 13 carry lugs 7 which are connected to bearings 8, 18 embracing the crankpins 9, 19. The discharge tray 22 may be carried by one set of bars and the sides 24<1> by the other, or the casing and tray may be separate and fixed. In an alternative arrangement, the side supporting bars are dispensed with and the sets of bars suspended by links at one end and driven by eccentrics at the other. As shown in Fig. 7, the bars may be of hollow formation with ratchet teeth on their upper faces and may be solid or provided with perforations or openings 40.
