Abstract

337,886. Price, J. H., Barnes, H., and Markham & Co., Ltd. Sept. 6, 1929. Tunnelling by boring.-In a rotary tunnelling-machine for use with a shield, the hub 9 of an inner cutter head 6 supports the oppositely rotating outer cutter head 5 and is keyed to a shaft 10 supported in a roller bearing 12 and a plain bearing 13, a thrust bearing 15 being also provided; a toothed wheel 19 secured to the hub 9, and an internally toothed rack 17 carried by the cutter head 5, are engaged by common pinions 29 whereby the opposite drive is effected. The pinions 29 are driven by electric motors 21 suspended from a girder 22 and acting through chains 23 and gearing 24 - - 28. Rollers 30, 31 on the shield 2 take the longitudinal and radial thrusts of the other cutter head. The shield is advanced by hydraulic rams 32 and has external fins 34. Scoops' 35 raise the spoil and deliver to a shoot 36. Specifications 13907/96 and 19756/02 are referred to.
